Initiative Summary & Purpose

The Employability Skills Digital Portfolio Mobile Application is a future tool designed to bridge classroom learning and real-world skills while promoting mental well-being. By integrating voice recordings, AI analysis, mental health check-ins, emotional intelligence, and mental well-being coping skills, the app aligns with Indiana’s educational standards and supports the holistic development of students. This app aims to create supportive school environments where students feel connected, safe, and empowered to succeed both academically and personally.

The Employability Skills Digital Portfolio Mobile Application is a proposed tool to help students and teachers track and document employability skills while promoting mental well-being and crisis prevention. This app will be a digital portfolio for students to showcase their skills, integrate mental health check-ins, and support emotional intelligence and mental well-being coping skills. By fostering a supportive school environment, the app aims to enhance academic and personal student success.

  1. Mental Health Check-In:
    • The app will include a daily mental health check-in feature, allowing students to share how they are feeling.
    • Students can report their mental health status, enabling teachers confidentially and trusted adults to monitor their well-being.
    • Crisis alerts will be included for students at risk, ensuring timely intervention and support for those experiencing thoughts of suicide or mental health crises.
  2. Integration of Emotional Intelligence:
    • The app will foster the development of emotional intelligence skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
    • Emotional Intelligence skills are crucial for managing stress, building healthy relationships, and making responsible decisions, all contributing to mental well-being and crisis prevention.
  3. Digital Portfolio for Students:
    • Students can request mental health support or connection to community resources via the application or inform trusted adults if a friend is facing a mental health crisis.
    • Students can upload and organize artifacts (photos, documents, videos) that exhibit their employability skills.
    • The app will feature a user-friendly interface for easy navigation and categorization of skills.
  4. Voice Recording for Teachers:
    • Teachers will be able to use the app to record verbal compliments and feedback about student performance as they give feedback to the student.
    • Voice recordings will be captured instantly and attached to the student’s digital portfolio.
    • Teachers will be conditioned to discover, name, and affirm positive wellness behaviors, increasing students’ sense of belonging, connection, and hope.
  5. AI-Driven Analysis:
    • The app will employ advanced AI algorithms to analyze recorded statements and feedback.
    • The AI will identify and extract key employability skills from the verbal feedback.
    • The system will automatically link the identified skills to the Indiana Department of Education’s employability skills framework, providing structured documentation.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:
    • The app will generate comprehensive reports that map student progress against the identified employability skills.
    • Teachers and students can access these reports to review and reflect on development areas and achievements.
    • Reports can be shared with parents, school administrators, and potential employers.
  7. Security and Privacy:
    • The app will ensure the highest standards of data security and privacy, protecting student information.
    • User permissions and access controls will be in place to safeguard sensitive data.
  8. Gamification:
    • The app could include games to encourage practice in emotional intelligence and mental well-being for students.

Vision

Formed in response to neuroscience findings that correlate student stress and success, the School Care Team addresses unprecedented stress among Hoosier youth. Aligned with Indiana Department of Education guidelines, the School Care Team provides strategies proven to manage stress, trauma, and mental health to enhance learning.
